Never underestimate the power of your voice in business.
Architecture of the voice
The voice is the most precious tool for rallying, influencing, and convincing others. It’s also a reflection of who we are at heart. That voice you hear calms you, irritates you, convinces you to take action, leaves you indifferent, or lulls you to sleep.
The voice has its own architecture, its own structure, which depends on several factors: the tongue, the soft palate, the position of the teeth, the larynx, and the lips.
A key exercise
I’d like to share an exercise with you. It’s no secret that we’re in the middle of an election campaign. Take this opportunity to analyze each candidate’s voice. Forget your own leanings, forget the content being presented, and concentrate on their voices. What do you hear?
Your voice reflects your present mood, emotions, core values, and beliefs. It can reveal disinterest, impatience, arrogance, but also empathy, openness, and commitment. The choice is yours. Ask yourself this: What is my vocal signature?
Answer the following questions with yes or no.
Recently, when I spoke up in a meeting, during a presentation, or in front of my team:
- I was asked to speak louder.
- I was asked to speak slower.
- I was asked to lower my voice.
- I was told that my voice was monotonous and boring.
- I was told that people had trouble understanding what I was saying.
If any of these statements apply to you, there are simple vocal techniques you can use to develop your voice.
Can we fully express ourselves through our voice?
Absolutely, but only if you’re aware of your speech rate, intonation, tone of voice, breathing, and how your voice can affect others. Get to know your voice. My theater background comes in handy every day in my work as a trainer and speaker, and I’m confident I can help you with this.
Just like athletes, practice is the key to improving the quality of your voice. Over time, your flaws will begin to fade and you’ll realize that you can play with your voice.
In conclusion
Your voice evokes emotion and resonates with others; it carries words and messages, giving meaning to the things you say. Don’t doubt for a moment that the quality of your voice can play a decisive role in your career.
“If the eyes are the mirror of the soul, the voice is the seat of emotions.” Nicole Simard
