Don’t hesitate. Say “YES”!

Summer’s around the corner, and as always, there’s a ton of stuff on the horizon: fundraisers, golf tournaments, marathons, bike rides, car washes, friendly competitions, and so much more.

As a recognized, socially-involved leader in your community, you might be invited to speak as an honorary chair, organizer, or sponsor of one of these events.

Your first instinct might be to say no if you’re worried you won’t measure up. Maybe you feel more at home on the field than behind a mic.

But let’s look at it a little differently to help you make a confident choice.

Seize the moment

  • Think of it as an opportunity, not a trial.
  • Be proud of the role you’ve been given. People value you.
  • Make a commitment to yourself. It’s a challenge worth taking.
  • Remember, these events usually happen in a relaxed, friendly setting.

Speak with conviction

  • Imbue your words with heart and enthusiasm.
  • Believe in your ideas and be open with your opinions.
  • Share stories of the day’s fun, unexpected moments.
  • Highlight the amazing work of volunteers. They’ll appreciate it.

Be approachable

  • Right from the start, smile and make eye contact with your audience. It’ll help foster an honest connection.
  • Use simple, clear language instead of buzzwords and jargon.
  • Don’t hijack the moment for a political speech. It’s not the place.
  • Respect the time you’re given. Attention spans are short.
  • And one last tip: a drink before speaking won’t help you.

So, now that you’ve thought it through, don’t hold back! Say “YES.” And if you’d like help preparing, you know how to reach me.
